Somali-Americans in Minnesota have reported increasing anxiety as U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies his criticism of the community. Leaders indicate that 'the apprehension is palpable' in the wake of Trump's claims that he does not want Somalis in the U.S., which he labeled as 'garbage'. Aj Awed, the executive director of the Cedar-Riverside Community Council, voiced concern about being targeted by the president. Reports of federal enforcement operations aimed at undocumented immigrants exacerbate these fears.

The Cedar-Riverside community, known for its significant Somali population, is now reconsidering events and gatherings due to safety concerns from these enforcement activities. Awed stresses that many caught in the enforcement operations are long-term residents and deserving citizens. Trump's derogatory remarks have galvanized community leaders to reassess their advocacy strategies and provide legal support.

Community members express deep concern that the actions against their population could lead to widespread unjust detentions. Jamal Osman, a Minneapolis Council member and naturalized U.S. citizen, articulated that many in the community are feeling threatened simply for their appearance. He highlights that while crimes may occur locally, the entire community should not suffer consequences for the actions of a few.

Following a series of allegations regarding fraudulent activities purportedly connected to some Somali individuals, Trump has escalated his public attacks, complicating the situation for those of Somali descent. The Department of Homeland Security has initiated operations that afflict even senior community members, and reactions included organizing legal observer training by local organizations to safeguard the rights of residents as federal authorities conduct their enforcement actions.

Kowsar Mohamed, another community representative, stressed that while intimidation tactics are intensifying, the community is preparing through empowerment efforts, emergency response plans, and advocacy that prioritizes their rights. As such, the Somali community in Minnesota stands united and resilient against the onslaught of fear and misunderstanding.
