Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's friendly match against Ukraine in Odense on Saturday but regained consciousness within minutes and walked off the pitch unaided, according to the Danish Football Association. The incident occurred in the 65th minute of the match, prompting immediate medical intervention as players and officials formed a protective ring around the midfielder.
Denmark's national team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed: 'Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly.' Eriksen, 34, had been fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) after suffering a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 against Finland in 2021.
The Danish star, who returned to play with Brentford in 2022 after his near-fatal episode, was making his 151st international appearance while playing for Wolfsburg this season. He had made 34 Bundesliga appearances for the German club during the 2025-26 campaign before the collapse. Eriksen is currently undergoing further examinations at a hospital to determine the cause of the incident.
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg described the scene: 'I saw Christian going down and knew immediately what it meant. Everyone reacted super-fast and with respect. I can only compliment the courage of those who took care of him.' Both Danish and Ukrainian players stood arm-in-arm in a huddle after the match was abandoned, following the same protocol used during Eriksen's return to football in 2022.
The match was halted after Eriksen was taken to an ambulance, with players applauding fans before departing. Denmark head coach Brian Riemer emphasized: 'The most important thing is that Christian is doing well. He has sent his regards to the players.' Neither team qualified for the World Cup, which begins Thursday.
This marks the second cardiac-related incident for Eriksen in his career, though he has consistently demonstrated remarkable resilience since his miraculous recovery in 2022. The Danish FA confirmed Eriksen will remain hospitalized for observation while his medical team investigates the cause of the collapse.
