In March, activist relatives of Mexico's many missing persons, responding to leads about a mass grave, stumbled upon horrific signs of brutality: three human crematory ovens, an accumulation of clothing, 200 pairs of shoes, and bone fragments.
Luz Toscano, part of the collective Buscadores Guerreros de Jalisco, explained the heart-wrenching discoveries, noting the presence of children’s toys and personal belongings that families immediately recognized as belonging to their loved ones. "People were desperate," Toscano reflected on the grim reality faced by families still searching for answers.
Tragically, local police had previously raided the ranch only months earlier but failed to uncover any of the gruesome evidence, leading to accusations of negligence and complicity. Jalisco's State Governor, Pablo Lemus, emphasized that his administration is working with federal authorities, asserting no local officials are escaping culpability.
As scrutiny intensifies, President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered federal investigators to step in, urging caution while investigations are ongoing. “It is important to make the investigation before we come to any conclusions,” she stated, as the region remains rife with unrest and unease about the existing violence against civilians.
