Leah Stewart, 35, writes that she has been given a 'second chance at life' after a shark bite at Sydney’s Coogee Beach.
In June she was mauled by a shark while swimming, suffering bites to her arms and legs. She was placed in an induced coma and underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of one arm.
An online fundraiser raised over AU$550,000 (US$394,000) for her treatment. The money secured her recovery at home and future medical options.
"After an incredibly difficult few months, I’m so happy that I’ve progressed enough to build some independence, and I can finally see some light after all of this," she posted.
She reflects on the support she received from family, friends and strangers worldwide.
This attack follows a spate of shark incidents in Australia this year.
- January: Four attacks over two days, including a fatal 12‑year‑old boy.
- May: A Queensland man was killed while spearfishing.
- Western Australia: A father of two died after a large shark attack.
Stewart’s story has drawn attention to ongoing conversations about safety, shark nets, and community responses to such dangerous incidents.
