In brief

Rajab Butt's recent legal troubles arose from his controversial acquisition of a lion cub, which has resulted in a court mandated community service to promote animal welfare.

In a notable case that has drawn attention to wildlife welfare regulations in Pakistan, famed YouTuber Rajab Butt has been sentenced to create 12 educational videos focused on animal rights and welfare. This ruling follows an incident where Butt received a lion cub as a wedding gift from Umar Dolla, the owner of another YouTube channel, during his nuptials last month. The video showcasing this moment quickly attracted scrutiny and led to legal action by the wildlife department.Explicitly directed by the court, Butt is expected to produce a five-minute educational video each month for the next year. He publicly expressed regret over the incident, recognizing that it was "inappropriate" to keep wild animals in such a manner. "As a social media influencer," Butt stated, "I should create positive content." He further acknowledged that he had not received legal permission to own the cub, thus setting a problematic example for his millions of followers. The lion cub, now affectionately named Bhatti, has been relocated to the Lahore Safari Zoo for proper care and safety. Butt's responsibility extends beyond mere content creation, as he will also be working alongside the wildlife department to ensure accurate messaging in his videos. This case escalated when a wildlife officer saw Butt's video showing the receipt of the animal and reported it to authorities.Interestingly, Dolla attempted to assert his ownership of the lion cub in court; however, the presiding judge had confirmed it had been unlawfully transferred to Butt. Tariq Janjua, the zoo's director, remarked on the hazards of domesticating lions, stating that such practices are both cruel to the animals and perilous to humans. Hence, this ruling serves not only as a penalty but also as a decisive step toward educating the broader public on the challenges and legalities surrounding wildlife ownership in Pakistan.
