In brief
V Harish, a 27‑year‑old Instagram finance guru, was found dead weeks after his account was disabled by Meta. His father alleges the YouTuber Jason Samuel bullied him online, leading to the tragedy. Samuel was arrested for extortion and defamation. The case fuels debate over who can give investment advice on social media. It also shows the growing influence—and risks—of online financial influencers.
V Harish, a 27‑year‑old finance influencer from Chennai, was found dead on Tuesday morning in his home, according to local police.
Harish ran the Instagram account Finance with Harish, amassing over 1.3 million followers with more than 1,500 videos breaking down market news into simple terms.
His account was disabled by Meta in September after complaints that he was not registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). A backup account was later also taken down.
The sudden loss sparked outrage. Harish’s father, J Vinayagam, filed a complaint alleging that YouTuber and venture‑studio CEO Jason Samuel caused his son’s death through online harassment and defamation, claiming Samuel tried to extort money from Harish.
Samuel was arrested on Thursday. Police say the complaint was registered under abetment to suicide, and they believe Samuel had a role in the case.
Samuel has denied the charges, stating in a post on X that he only pointed out Harish’s lack of SEBI licence and urged him to register properly.
The case has ignited debate over the growing influence of financial content creators in India and the need for regulation and oversight of investors’ advisers on social media.
Experts warn that a lack of legitimate credentials can mislead first‑time investors who are flocking to platforms for quick wealth advice.
Support organisations are urging people with suicidal thoughts to seek help through the AASRA helpline in India or contact Befrienders Worldwide for assistance.
