In brief

Kenya has confirmed its second Ebola death, a 65‑year‑old woman linked to the first patient, marking the country's first outbreak of the virus. Seven other patients are receiving treatment at two isolation facilities, and the outbreak remains contained to a single transmission cluster with no evidence of community spread. The first death occurred on Oct 5 after a man from the Democratic Republic of Congo was treated in Nairobi. Kenya has intensified border screenings, introduced digital surveillance forms for travelers from nine high‑risk countries, and is monitoring the situation closely.

Ebola patient at Kenyan border

Kenya has confirmed its second Ebola death, a 65‑year‑old woman linked to the first patient, marking the country's first outbreak of the virus.

The late patient was quarantined after developing symptoms on 13 Oct, the Health Ministry said.

Seven other patients are receiving treatment at two isolation facilities across Nairobi and Mombasa. All belong to the same transmission cluster and there is no sign of community spread.

The first death occurred on 5 Oct, when a man from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who had traveled to Nairobi after several hospitals in his home country, died a few days later.

Kenya has ramped up screening at borders, especially the Malaba crossing with Uganda, and introduced digital surveillance forms for travelers from nine high‑risk countries.

Health officials caution that the Bundibugyo species of Ebola—no approved vaccine—remains a threat and that the country must continue vigilance.

International agencies, including the International Rescue Committee, advise strict adherence to screening protocols and prompt reporting of suspected cases.
