In brief

Toto, a leading Japanese toilet manufacturer, has issued a warning against using toilet paper to clean its bidet toilet seats, citing potential damage.

In an unexpected turn, the renowned Japanese toilet manufacturer Toto has cautioned users against the common practice of wiping toilet seats with toilet paper. This recommendation follows numerous social media complaints regarding scratches and discoloration on their innovative bidet toilet seats, which are equipped with modern features like automatic flushing and heated seating.According to a Toto representative in an interview with Mainichi Shimbun, the bidet toilet seats are crafted from plastic resin, a material known for its durability against detergents and versatility in design. However, wiping these surfaces with dry toilet paper or cloth can lead to micro scratches—tiny, often invisible imperfections where dirt can accumulate and subsequently result in discoloration. The advice from Toto isn’t unique; cleaning specialists and various lifestyle platforms have previously issued similar warnings. They recommend utilizing a soft cloth dampened with water or a mild detergent instead, while strongly advising against the use of thinners, metal scrubbers, or any abrasive materials that could compromise the seat's integrity.Despite acknowledging the issue, Toto has stated there are no immediate plans to alter the material used in their toilet seats, although they are exploring options for more scratch-resistant materials in the future. Their flagship product, the Washlet, features numerous technological advancements, including an automatic lid, an air dryer, and adjustable water pressure for the bidet function.Japanese toilets, celebrated for their intricate designs and advanced features, have become a curious point of interest for tourists and a source of national pride, reflecting the country’s commitment to hospitality.
