Singer Katy Perry has successfully appealed against a trademark decision over her name, clearing the way for her to continue using it in Australia. The legal dispute began when Taylor, who sells clothing under her birth name, sued Perry over potential confusion in the marketplace. On Friday, three appeals judges ruled in favor of Katy Perry, stating that she had been using her name as a trademark five years prior to Taylor’s business launch, and had already established an "international reputation" within the entertainment industry. They further annulled Taylor's trademark registration.

Following the ruling, Taylor expressed her disappointment, describing her legal fight against Perry as akin to "David and Goliath" in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. The judges noted that it was unfortunate for both women—eager and driven entrepreneurs— to be pitted against one another unknowingly. They acknowledged that while both women invested extensive effort into their respective businesses, it was the entertainment industry's growing reach that ultimately led Taylor to file for the trademark upon realizing Perry's fame.

A judge in favor of Taylor last year even cited one of Perry's hit songs, referring to the situation as a narrative of “two women, two teenage dreams, and one name.” This latest development comes as Katy Perry gears up for her "Lifetimes" world tour in early 2025, aimed at promoting her comeback album “143.”
