In brief
With a focus on customizability, Airbnb's new app features also include bespoke tours, exclusive experiences with celebrities, and the ability to access these services even without a booking.
Airbnb is making significant strides in enhancing its platform by integrating a variety of luxury services aimed at transforming the way travelers interact with their accommodations and experiences. The company’s chief executive, Brian Chesky, recently announced that users will now have access to luxury services like personal trainers, massage therapists, and chefs, as part of a redesign of its app, expanding its offerings beyond short-term rentals. Chesky emphasized that while hotels are often chosen for their services, Airbnb aims to provide users with both the spaciousness of a rental and the luxury services typically associated with hotels, saying, “Now, we're giving you the best of both worlds.” This revamp comes during uncertain times for the travel industry, as recent reports indicate a potential slowing of bookings in the U.S. influenced by unpredictable trade policies under former President Trump.Although Airbnb has welcomed over two billion guests since its inception in 2008, the company faces various challenges, including potential restrictions on short-term rentals in several cities recently. The newly introduced services will be available in 260 cities worldwide, starting at prices as low as $50 (£37.57).The app also includes an upgraded experiences tab that allows users to schedule unique tours and activities, an option that was initially rolled out in 2016. Gary Bowerman, director of travel marketing firm Check-in Asia, noted that modern travelers are increasingly focused on customizing their trips and experiences, rather than just logistics regarding travel and accommodations.Additionally, the new features comprise an 'originals' tab that lists exclusive experiences globally, such as playing beach volleyball in Rio de Janeiro with Olympic athlete Carol Solberg or spending a Sunday with NFL star Patrick Mahomes. Luxury travel consultant Anastasia Oriordan highlighted the growing trend of tourists seeking unique and personalized experiences, stating, “The benchmark or the goalpost for unique experiences is constantly moving,” as travelers seek out off-the-beaten-path adventures.
