In brief

The Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh sees Gulf leaders reassuring investors about business safety, minimizing conflict discussions, even as regional tensions persist.

At the recent Future Investment Initiative forum held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, senior officials aimed to reassure overseas investors regarding the safety and continuity of doing business in the Gulf, despite the backdrop of ongoing Middle East conflicts. The conference, dubbed the "Davos of the Desert," saw minimal mention of the wars in Gaza and Lebanon which have been destabilizing the region for over a year.Saudi officials expressed the region's commitment to economic resilience, hoping to dispel fears that escalating conflicts might hinder their diversification strategies. Khalid Al-Falih, the Saudi investment minister, touched on the human suffering and shipping disruptions caused by the war but remained optimistic about the Gulf's economic outlook, stating, "the tailwinds are much stronger than the headwinds."Under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's leadership, Saudi Arabia has focused on reducing its overwhelming dependence on oil by advancing economic diversification efforts and relaxing some cultural restrictions. The normalization of relations between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, established prior to the recent hostilities, was seen as a significant step towards removing barriers to economic growth in the region. As international stakeholders listened, the challenge remains whether the Gulf can maintain its ambitions amidst rising tensions, especially given Iran's involvement in supporting various militant groups engaged in conflict against Israel. The overarching goal remains to diminish the effects of these conflicts on the Gulf's promising economic future.
