SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former Utah Supreme Court justice is expected to be named the next president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following the death of President Russell M. Nelson over the weekend.

Announcing his successor — Dallin H. Oaks — is largely a formality due to the church's well-defined leadership hierarchy that has governed it for decades. The official announcement of the new president will likely be made after Nelson's funeral scheduled for October 7.

Who leads the church?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the Mormon church, is governed by a president and two top counselors, forming the First Presidency. These leaders typically come from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a body that helps establish church policy and oversees its business interests.

All 15 top officials in the church adhere to an all-male priesthood rule.

How are the presidents chosen?

Succession is determined by the longest-tenured member of the Quorum of the Twelve, a custom established over a century ago to ensure a seamless transition without internal or external lobbying. This protocol has been followed consistently since it was introduced in 1889 after the death of President John Taylor.

Nelson, who was the oldest-ever president of the church, passed away at 101. Following his death, the First Presidency dissolved, and his counselors rejoined the Quorum, which now consists of 14 members.

What does the president do?

The church president is regarded as a prophet, seer, and revelator, leading through divine guidance. He sets policies, interprets doctrines, manages church programs and oversees its large-scale business operations, which include real estate and educational institutions.

How long do the presidents serve?

Presidents remain in office until their death, resulting in various tenure lengths. The church has seen presidents serve anywhere from less than a year to nearly three decades.

How are the president’s two counselors chosen?

A new president typically selects counselors from the Quorum of the Twelve, which ensures continuity within the church's leadership.

How are new Quorum members chosen?

New members of the Quorum can come from various backgrounds, often from lower-tier leadership positions. Recent selections have seen increased diversity aimed at reflecting the church's global membership.

What about women?

Women oversee several organizations within the church, but the highest leadership ranks remain male-dominated. The Relief Society, which focuses on women's activities, is led by the president and counselors but operates below male leadership structures.
