Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy has been shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities have reported.
Police received notifications about the shooting in the Frankivsk district of Lviv, western Ukraine, around midday on Saturday. The identity of the assailant remains unknown.
Parubiy, aged 54, was a significant figure in Ukraine's Maidan movement, which called for closer ties with the European Union (EU) and contributed to the ousting of pro-Russian former president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the act as a terrible murder and expressed his condolences.
The circumstances surrounding Parubiy's death remain unclear, but unconfirmed reports indicate he was shot multiple times by an individual on an e-bike, disguised as a courier.
Authorities including Ukraine's national police, Lviv Regional police, and the security service are reportedly conducting an investigation into the assassination.
Presidential statements confirmed that the Minister of Internal Affairs and Prosecutor General provided updates on the situation, with a commitment to mobilizing all necessary resources to identify and capture the perpetrator.
