Myanmar's figurehead president, Myint Swe, has died at the age of 74, according to the military junta, following a battle with neurological disorders. Myint Swe's passing was confirmed by the junta leaders, who stated he had been receiving medical care for over a year due to declining health.

Myint Swe had been in a ceremonial role since his appointment after the military coup that toppled the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. The junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, had been carrying out the president's duties since July 2024. Myint Swe passed away in a hospital in Nay Pyi Taw at 08:28 local time (02:58 GMT) on Thursday, as a result of "neurodegenerative diseases and related neurological disorders." The military confirmed a state funeral would be arranged for him.

Prior to his death, the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported that he had been in "critical condition," experiencing significant weight loss and cognitive decline since July 2023. Myint Swe had sought treatment in Singapore in April 2024, embarking on medical leave shortly thereafter.

The political landscape in Myanmar remains harsh, with ongoing civil conflict between the junta forces and various ethnic armed groups since the coup. Min Aung Hlaing announced plans to conduct national elections in late 2025 or early 2026, the first since the military assumed control. However, many observers suggest these elections are intended to legitimize the junta’s hold on power through proxy political parties.

Last week, the junta lifted the state of emergency and transitioned authority to an interim government in preparation for the upcoming elections. Despite these changes, Min Aung Hlaing continues to wield significant power as both the acting president and military chief of the nation.
