In a startling account, Venezuelan kayaker Adrián Simancas recounted the intense moment he nearly found himself consumed by a humpback whale while paddling in the Strait of Magellan, near Chile’s Patagonian coast. At just 23 years old, Simancas experienced a surreal encounter with a whale that left him shaken yet grateful for his survival.

Simancas was kayaking with his father, Dall, when he felt an immense force push against his kayak. Describing the incident, he said, "I thought it could have been an orca or even a sea monster." The kayaker soon found himself enveloped in the whale's mouth, momentarily confused and fearful about his fate.

"I felt a slimy texture brush my face," he recalled, with darkness surrounding him. Panic began to settle in as he wrestled with thoughts of what to do if the creature fully swallowed him. Yet, astonishingly, he felt himself being lifted toward the surface soon after.

"I finally got to the surface and realized that it hadn't eaten me," Simancas said, his father capturing the terrifying moment on video just meters away. Dall, 49, initially panicked when he noticed his son had vanished, but relief flooded over him as he witnessed Adrián resurfacing from the icy waters.

Reviewing the footage, Simancas was taken aback by the whale's immense size, realizing how close he had come to disaster. "I hadn't seen the moment when the whale approached; I only heard it, which made me nervous," he shared.

Wildlife expert Roched Jacobson Seba explained the remarkable nature of their encounter. He noted that humpback whales have a throat size comparable to a household pipe, making them incapable of swallowing large objects like kayaks. The incident likely occurred when the whale was feeding and accidentally scooped up both the kayak and its prey.

This accidental interaction serves as a reminder of the need for caution in marine environments where whales may be present. Seba cautioned against using silent vessels like kayaks and paddleboards in these waters, emphasizing the importance of audible presence for the safety of both the whales and water enthusiasts.

Adrián Simancas reflected on his encounter, calling it a “second chance” and an opportunity for personal growth. "I’ve been invited to reflect on my life choices and appreciate the unique experiences that come my way," he said, grateful for the incredible story he can now share.
