The execution of 62-year-old Fan Weiqiu was carried out on Monday after he received a death sentence for driving his vehicle into a crowded exercise area outside a stadium in Zhuhai, Southern China, on November 11. This tragic incident is reported to be one of the deadliest attacks on Chinese soil in the last ten years, resulting in 35 fatalities and injuring many more.

The underlying motive, according to court proceedings, stemmed from Fan's deep dissatisfaction over the division of property following his divorce. The court characterized his actions as “extremely vile” and noted the brutality of the methods he employed during the attack.

Fan's execution comes just weeks following his sentencing, amidst a growing trend of violent attacks aimed at strangers in China. His act of violence was part of a series of 19 similar incidents that occurred across the country in 2024, with two occurring soon after the attack in Zhuhai. The troubling pattern has raised concerns about public safety and the need for effective preventative measures.
