NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly a year into his second term, President Donald Trump’s work on the economy hasn’t lived up to the expectations of many people in his own party, according to a new AP-NORC survey.
The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds a significant gap between the economic leadership Americans remembered from Trump’s first term and what they’ve experienced so far as he creates a stunning level of turmoil at home and abroad.
Just 16% of Republicans say Trump has helped 'a lot' in addressing the cost of living, down from 49% in April 2024. The perception that economic conditions have worsened under his leadership contrasts sharply with his polls regarding immigration policies, where he maintains solid support.
Moreover, consumers appear increasingly pessimistic about their economic circumstances. Even as inflation cools, many find prices on essentials remain higher than before Trump took office.
Many GOP voters express dissatisfaction with the economic outcomes of Trump’s policies. Overall, Trump's job approval stands close to 80% among Republicans, but only 4 in 10 say he has made a meaningful impact on cost issues.
Interestingly, Trump's immigration policies continue to receive support from around 80% of Republicans, indicating a split in satisfaction depending on the issue.
The survey underscores a complex dynamic within the Republican base, where loyalty to Trump remains high despite increasing doubts regarding his economic effectiveness.
