Since seizing power in September 2021, Mamadi Doumbouya has transitioned into a leadership role that will culminate in his inauguration as Guinea's president after winning a controversial election, where he claimed 87% of the vote.
Initially a colossus in military fatigues, he has traded his camouflage for a more relatable appearance in casual clothing and traditional attire, attempting to portray himself as a leader close to the people. However, concerns linger about the legitimacy of his rule, as political opposition has faced severe repression under his administration, including bans on demonstrations and the disappearance of activists.
Although Doumbouya appears to maintain a connection with the populace, analysts suggest that his recent wardrobe change does not signify a genuine shift away from his military roots, especially given his remorseless handling of dissent.
The people's mixed perception of him—the combination of skepticism about his democratic intentions and admiration for his initial overthrow of the prior regime—will come into play as he now attempts to establish a narrative of sovereignty and national unity.
The nation's eyes are also set on the potential economic transformations tied to resource exploitation, particularly concerning Guinea's lucrative iron-ore reserves in Simandou. As Doumbouya begins his presidency, his handling of these resources will likely be a defining aspect of his political legacy.
