BULVERDE, Texas (AP) — A tragic incident unfolded at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde, Texas, when a 15-year-old student shot a teacher and then fatally shot himself, according to local authorities.
No other injuries were reported in the shooting that took place early Monday morning. The Comal County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed any details regarding the motive behind the shooting, leaving parents and the community seeking answers.
The injured teacher was transported to a hospital in San Antonio, but no updates on her condition have been provided. The male student died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.
School officials reported that the institution went into lockdown at 8:34 a.m. just before classes were set to begin. Eyewitness accounts from students described hearing loud bangs and screams, prompting teachers to quickly secure their classrooms.
Students were transported to a nearby middle school where parents waited in long lines, some expressing their need for prayer and support as they awaited reunification with their children. Jesse Lopez, a parent of a student at the high school, shared his fears regarding his daughter’s return to school, especially given her autism.
Originally opened in August 2020, Hill Country College Preparatory High School focuses on a curriculum centered around science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, with a growing enrollment of approximately 260 students this academic year.
