Tumbler Ridge Mass Shooting: What We Know So Far
Canadian police say nine people have been killed in a mass shooting at a school and home in the remote rural community of Tumbler Ridge in the western province of British Columbia. Another 25 people were injured, and the suspect's body was also found at the scene. This is what we know so far about one of the deadliest gun attacks in Canada's history.
When Did the Attack Start?
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at 13:20 local time on Tuesday (20:20 GMT). Police responded by deploying officers to the scene, and issuing an active shooter alert for the rural community and surrounding areas. A lockdown was activated at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and nearby Tumbler Ridge Elementary School, with police arriving within two minutes of the call.
Victims and Injuries
The RCMP confirmed that six individuals inside the school, along with two victims found in a nearby home, have been located deceased. Two others were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, and approximately 25 others are being assessed at the local medical center for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are conducting searches of additional homes and properties to determine if more victims may be linked to the shooting.
About the Suspect
The suspect was reportedly known to authorities but has not been publicly identified. The individual was found dead inside the school with a self-inflicted injury. Police are investigating the suspect’s possible motives and any connections to the school.
