BRUSSELS (PulseWire) — Europe faces a complex array of challenges, including threats from Russia, trade difficulties, and geopolitical tensions, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her recent State of the Union speech. Stressing the importance of EU independence, she called for strengthened measures to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Von der Leyen highlighted the need for enhanced trade restrictions and sanctions on Israel to address the humanitarian concerns arising from the Gaza conflict. She stated, Man-made famine can never be a weapon of war... This must stop, as she emphasized the EU's moral responsibility regarding the crisis.
In a critical move, von der Leyen defended the agreement with U.S. President Trump that included a 15% duty rate on most European exports, insisting the deal was necessary to protect millions of jobs dependent on transatlantic ties.
Europe is in a fight for our values and our future. We must stand firm and assert our independence in a world where many major powers are ambivalent or hostile to our existence, she said.
Regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, von der Leyen expressed the need for consistent pressure on Russia to pave the way for negotiations. She announced potential new sanctions targeting Russia's energy sector and highlighted the use of confiscated Russian assets to provide financial support for Ukraine.
Additionally, the EU plans to establish a 'drone alliance' with Ukraine, recognizing the critical role drones play in modern warfare. This initiative will include a commitment of 6 billion euros ($7 billion) towards bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities.
