US President Donald Trump has announced that the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia will halt fighting effective this evening. This announcement came after discussions following recent deadly border clashes that claimed at least 20 lives and displaced half a million people.

While both leaders have not commented directly on the ceasefire, Thai PM Anutin Charnvirakul stated in a news conference that a ceasefire is contingent on Cambodia's withdrawal of troops and removal of landmines. Trump's social media platform, Truth Social, reported the leaders' agreement to cease all shooting and their willingness to return to the original Peace Accord.

The conflict, which escalated on July 24, involved Cambodia launching rockets into Thailand, leading to retaliatory air strikes and intense fighting across at least six provinces. The territorial dispute between the two nations has historical roots dating back to the post-French colonial era.

The agreement comes after days of turmoil and highlights the ongoing challenges in securing lasting peace in the region.
