Republican U.S. Representative Troy Nehls of Texas declared on Saturday that he will retire from Congress at the conclusion of his term in 2026 to devote more time to his family. Nehls, who has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump—famously wearing a T-shirt featuring Trump's mugshot—shared the news with Trump personally via the social platform X.

In his announcement, he expressed gratitude towards Trump, stating, “President Trump has always been a strong ally for our district and a true friend, and I wanted him to hear it from me first.” Nehls also revealed that he is backing his twin brother Trever Nehls to succeed him in Congress, with Trever announcing his intent to run and align with Trump's vision.

The White House has not responded to inquiries regarding Nehls' retirement. Since entering Congress in 2021, following a lengthy career in law enforcement and the Army Reserve, Nehls has been an active member. Notably, he was involved in efforts to challenge the results of President Biden's 2020 election and was briefly appointed to a committee examining the January 6 Capitol insurrection.

Currently serving on the Judiciary and the Transportation and Infrastructure committees, Nehls secured a substantial victory in his district, located southwest of Houston, winning by over 24 percentage points last year.}
