Sir Keir Starmer has described President Donald Trump's remarks about British troops in Afghanistan as insulting and frankly appalling.
On Thursday, Trump stated that US allies stayed a little off the front lines in the conflict and expressed uncertainty about NATO's commitment in the event of a crisis.
Starmer stated that had he spoken in such a manner, he would certainly apologize, emphasizing the respect due to those who served.
Trump's comments sparked international outrage, particularly given that UK forces suffered substantial casualties in Afghanistan, including 457 service personnel killed during military operations following NATO's invocation of collective security post the September 11 attacks.
Starmer emphasized, I will never forget their courage, their bravery and the sacrifice they made for their country, reinforcing the emotional toll Trump's remarks have taken on servicemen and their families.
There were many also who were injured, some with life-changing injuries. Trump's comments have caused deep hurt for loved ones of those who served, and indeed across the country, said Starmer.
During the interview, Trump dismissed the contributions of NATO allies, prompting a slew of responses from across the UK political landscape. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey were among those criticizing Trump's statements, highlighting their disrespect to service members.
The White House defended Trump's views, insisting on the importance of American contributions to NATO, yet the UK leaders continue to call for acknowledgment and an apology from the US president.
