Four people have been detained by French police after protesters set off flares during a concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Paris on Thursday night.

Clashes broke out in the auditorium during one of three disruptions to the performance led by conductor Lahav Shani and pianist Sir Andras Schiff.

The concert, which featured a program of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, had already faced criticism from a French performing arts union, and pro-Palestinian activists had called for a boycott of the event.

However, Culture Minister Rachida Dati defended freedom of creativity as a French value, while Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that nothing could excuse the serious disturbances in the hall.

According to the Philharmonie de Paris, ticket holders attempted to disrupt the concert three times, including twice by setting off flares, which filled the auditorium with smoke at one point.

Video footage showed a man with a flare confronting spectators as tensions escalated. Following the disturbances, the venue took action against the troublemakers, allowing the concert to resume peacefully.

Government responses were swift, with Laurent Nuñez firmly condemning the incidents and praising the police for their quick action. Nonetheless, Manon Aubry, a member of the European Parliament for the radical left France Unbowed, refrained from condemning the disruptions, suggesting the orchestra's ties to Israel warranted the protests.

Prior to the concert, pro-Palestinian activists argued for its cancellation, while the CGT-Spectacle union called for the audience to be reminded of accusations against Israel's leaders, characterizing the concert as an attempt at normalisation by the State of Israel.

Dati emphasized that there was no justification for a cultural boycott and condemned antisemitism. The Philharmonie de Paris remarked that safety threats towards the public, staff, and artists are entirely unacceptable, highlighting the severity of bringing violence into a concert hall.

The controversy surrounding Lahav Shani continues, as he recently faced another incident where a performance was canceled due to queries surrounding his stance on the Israeli government.
