Prince William, the Prince of Wales, will attend the funeral of King Harald V of Norway in Oslo on 9 September, as announced by Buckingham Palace.
In a personal capacity, Princess Anne will also be present; she is the godmother of Norway’s new monarch, King Haakon VIII.
The late king, a popular moderniser, had reigned for 35 years and died last month at the age of 89.
According to royal sources, Prince William will attend on behalf of King Charles, as it is traditionally uncommon for a monarch to attend another head of state’s funeral.
Large crowds are expected for the farewell to King Harald, with a procession that will be followed by a service at Oslo Cathedral.
Mourners queued to pay their respects to the king while he lay in state in the chapel of the Royal Palace in Oslo.
At the funeral, the widowed Queen Sonja, members of the Norwegian royal family—including the new King Haakon VIII—and other European royals will also be in attendance.
The service will be followed by a private burial in Norway’s royal mausoleum at the Akershus Fortress.
King Haakon delivered an emotional televised speech, thanking his father for being a “good dad” and underscoring the values of equality, law and justice.
The ceremony ties into recent scrutiny of the Norwegian royal family’s personal affairs, including Queen Mette‑Marit’s past friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and her son’s criminal convictions. While Prince William travels to Norway, King Charles remains in Scotland after meeting President Macron at the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, and is due to host Andy Burnham at Balmoral.
