Oslo Mayor Cancels Wedding After King Harald V’s Death

Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe abruptly called off her wedding to fiancé Pål Sandvid after the death of King Harald V on Friday. The ceremony, slated to take place that day, was postponed as the may— which followed the king’s sudden passing at Oslo’s national hospital— was seen as a national tragedy.

In an Instagram tribute, Lindboe wrote, “It’s hard to imagine an Oslo and a Norway without you. You didn’t need a crowd to be King.” Her post reflects the depth of respect the city holds for its monarch.

King Harald, who reigned for 35 years, succumbed to a rare blood condition. His son, King Haakon VIII, ascended to the throne the same day, ushering in a new era for the Norwegian monarchy.

No new date for the wedding has been announced, according to a statement by the mayor’s adviser. After five years together, Lindboe announced her engagement in June.

The king was remembered for breaking tradition, marrying a commoner—Queen Sonja—and serving as a unifying figure during challenging times. He died on the eve of his 58th wedding anniversary. Citizens gathered at the Royal Palace to lay flowers in remembrance.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre delivered a televised memorial address, noting, “Our country is united in grief and gratitude for King Harald’s service.” King Charles III of Britain mourned the loss of a “dear cousin.”
