Live‑streaming murder sparks debate over influencers and cartels in Mexico
In Culiacán’s fast‑food corridor, 20‑year‑old livestreamer César Gastélum was shot dead by a motorbike rider moments after a camera captured the fatal encounter. The gunfire, which occurred in front of two friends, left the online audience stunned and the city’s security forces scrambling to respond.
Mexico’s Sinaloa state has become a battleground for rival cartels, and the murder has reignited debate over whether social‑media stars are becoming collateral in the war. Gastélum was not on any threat list, but prosecutors say his posts — some alluding to a “criminal group” — may have drawn attention from the gangs that fight for control of the region.
Influencers at risk
More than ten content creators have disappeared in Sinaloa since the 2024 cartel clash between the La Mayiza and Los Chapitos factions. The digital world’s promise of instant fame and lavish views often mirrors the same values that cartels promote, according to University of Iberoamerica communications expert Claudia Arruñada.
Arruñada warned that influencers who flaunt luxury can inadvertently become vocal allies for criminal enterprises, provoking retaliation from rival groups who see them as propaganda tools.
In January 2025, a leaflet dropped from a plane highlighted 25 influencers and musicians linked to La Mayiza, of whom some were already dead or eliminated. While Gastélum’s name was not on the list, his death is costly proof of the deadly reach cartels can extend via the internet.
President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to investigate and prosecute the killing, emphasising a crackdown on narcoculture and a desire to sever the connection between popular media and the underworld.
Officials claim a 48% drop in murders in 2025, yet incidents like Gastélum’s illustrate how violence can spill beyond streets into the digital domain, eroding public safety and challenging the rule of law.
