BALTIMORE (PulseWire) — Kilmar Abrego Garcia was due to check in with immigration authorities on Friday, just hours after being released from detention following a judge's order. The Salvadoran citizen was a focal point of the Trump administration’s immigration policy debate after he was wrongfully deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador earlier this year and held in custody upon return to the U.S.
Abrego Garcia is scheduled to appear at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Baltimore. His release was ordered by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, who criticized federal authorities for detaining him without legal justification.
Mistakenly Deported and Returning Home
A resident of Maryland for several years, Garcia initially immigrated to the U.S. illegally as a teenager to join his brother. Although granted protection from deportation in 2019 due to genuine fears of gang violence in El Salvador, he remains under ICE supervision without full residency status. His wrongful deportation earlier this year led to significant public backlash and legal action.
After being mistakenly deported and incarcerated in a dangerous prison in El Salvador, he was brought back to the U.S. amidst growing public outcry and an order from the court, but not without facing allegations of human smuggling in connection to a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee.
