Italy Puts Nearly All Major Cities on Highest Heat Alert
Italy’s health officials warn that almost all major cities are on red‑alert for extreme heat.

Health authorities say 19 cities—from Rome in the north to Naples in the south—are already on the highest “red” level, with forecasts that by Monday all but two will rise to that zone. Temperatures on Saturday hit mid‑30s °C across the peninsula, putting even healthy residents at risk.
Why the heat is so intense – a subtropical anticyclone from North Africa is tightening over the Mediterranean, spiking temperatures and creating tinder for wildfires that have struck several European nations.
Firefighters in Greece, France, Portugal and Spain are battling blazes that have burned thousands of hectares. In France, a forest fire in Var forced the evacuation of 2,500 people, while in Spain over 200,000 hectares have burned—about five times the yearly average.
Climate data shows Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average, intensifying heatwaves, stressing water supplies and fuelling more destructive wildfires.
