Russia has intensified its strikes on the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa, causing widespread power cuts and threatening the region's maritime infrastructure.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba stated that Moscow is conducting systematic attacks on Odesa, indicating a possible shift in the focus of the conflict towards this strategic region.
President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the persistent attacks appear aimed at obstructing Ukraine's access to essential maritime logistics.
Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to cut off Ukraine's sea access in retaliation for previous drone attacks on Russian tankers operating in the Black Sea.
The term shadow fleet refers to the fleet of tankers Russia uses to evade international sanctions imposed following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Recent strikes in Odesa resulted in electricity outages affecting 120,000 people and started a fire at a major port, destroying numerous containers filled with flour and vegetable oil. This incident highlights a series of hundreds of strikes that have disrupted power supplies in the region and resulted in significant casualties, including a tragic missile strike on Pivdenniy port that killed eight individuals.
One attack earlier this week resulted in the death of a woman traveling with her three children and temporarily severed access to the Odesa region's sole bridge connecting Ukraine and Moldova.
After the dismissal of the air force commander for the region, Zelensky announced that a new commander would be appointed soon, emphasizing the strategic importance of Odesa's port to Ukraine's economy.
Despite the ongoing war, Ukraine remains one of the world's leading exporters of wheat and corn. Since August 2023, Odesa has been crucial for exporting grain through a corridor towards Turkey, navigating safely along the coastlines of Romania and Bulgaria.
Zelensky reiterated the necessity of pressure on Russia to end its aggression, asserting that any diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict cannot ignore the ongoing military threats to critical regions like Odesa. Meanwhile, discussions in Miami involving U.S. and Ukrainian officials have yielded no clear advancements, despite optimistic rhetoric. U.S. President Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff stated that they are working on aligning positions based on a recent peace proposal from Ukraine.
Russian officials have responded critically to these diplomatic discussions, accusing European countries of undermining potential agreements with the U.S. and claiming Western fears of a Russian attack are unfounded.
