Renee Good’s family has filed two lawsuits against the US government and former Trump officials after she was shot and killed by an immigration agent in Minneapolis.

Good, a 37‑year‑old mother of three, was killed on January 7 during a large ICE raid that drew millions to watch a viral video of the shooting. Protests erupted across the city and the country after the footage showed the officer, Jonathan Ross, firing multiple shots at Good.

The first lawsuit, brought by Good’s brother Brent Ganger and partner Becca Good, accuses the federal government of “battery, assault, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence” that caused Good’s death. It cites the Federal Tort Claims Act, which allows citizens to sue for personal injury or death caused by federal employee negligence.

The second suit goes a step further, targeting ICE officer Jonathan Ross as well as former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and White House border tsar Tom Homan. Plaintiffs claim a conspiracy to interfere with civil rights by senior federal officials, federal immigration agents and private actors.

“Our government has become a grave and mortal threat to its own citizens,” attorney Antonio Romanucci told a Thursday news conference.

White House spokesperson Lauren Bis responded by calling the lawsuits “baseless” and said the administration would “vigorously defend these claims.” She also referenced President Trump’s statements that Good had “violently, wilfully and viciously” run toward the ICE officer, a claim former officials and witnesses dispute.

Good’s mother testified at a congressional hearing, describing herself as a registered Republican who believed ICE protects Americans, but she now demands accountability when her daughter was killed.

The lawsuits come amid growing scrutiny of ICE operations under the Joe Biden administration, following the removal of ICE chief Greg Bovino and a halt to the Minneapolis raid operations weeks after the shooting.

At least ten people have been killed in interaction with immigration officers during Trump’s second term, according to the Associated Press.
