In brief
Valerie, the resilient dachshund, went missing in November 2022 while at a camping site, prompting an extensive rescue effort by Kangala Wildlife Rescue that lasted over a year.
Kangala Wildlife Rescue shared the heartwarming story of a miniature dachshund named Valerie who has been retrieved alive after spending an astounding 529 days in the Australian wilderness. The dog was last seen by her owners, Georgia Gardner and Joshua Fishlock, during a camping trip on Kangaroo Island in November 2022. They had left Valerie momentarily in a playpen while they went fishing, and upon returning, the dog had vanished. The rescue effort, which has been described as "around the clock," involved using Ms. Gardner’s t-shirt to create a "scent trail" that led to a trap, successfully luring Valerie. According to Kangala Wildlife Rescue, the volunteers dedicated over 1,000 hours to searching for her, covering a massive 5,000 kilometers (3,109 miles).Surveillance cameras, a trap cage equipped with a remote door, pet food, clothing from Ms. Gardner, and some of Valerie’s toys were all part of the meticulous plan to rescue the lost dog. Lisa Karran, a director at Kangala, revealed that she wore pieces of Ms. Gardner’s clothing to gain Valerie’s trust after she had been captured, allowing the dog to calm down in her presence. Valerie's adventure had not been without early encounters; she was spotted hiding beneath a parked car by other campers shortly after going missing, which scared her and prompted her to flee further into bushland. Throughout the extensive search, locals reported sightings of a dog matching Valerie's description, which kept hope alive. In a moving video shared online, the Karrans detailed the emotional rollercoaster that was the rescue mission. The technique employed to ensure Valerie would not escape again involved waiting patiently until she was calm enough to enter the trap. Mr. Karran noted, "She went right into the back corner, which is where we wanted her. I pressed the button and thankfully it all worked perfectly."After finally reuniting with their beloved pet, Ms. Gardner expressed her gratitude on social media, encouraging pet owners in similar situations to never lose hope: "For anyone who's ever lost a pet, your feelings are valid and never give up hope. Sometimes good things happen to good people."
