In brief

US immigration investigators carried out a judicially authorized search warrant at the Washington, DC home of Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar on Monday, marking the first physical raid on an elected official in recent years. No details of the underlying probe were released, but Omar accused the move of political intimidation and said she would not be silenced. President Donald Trump denied any involvement and insulted Omar, calling her a "complainer" while describing her background as a "non-country". The timing—just 22 days before the November mid‑term election—has drawn criticism from Democrats, who say it is an attempt to influence the ballot.

US immigration investigators carried out a judicially authorized search warrant at the Washington, DC home of Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar on Monday, marking the first physical raid on an elected official in recent years.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents executed the warrant, but the Justice Department said nothing beyond “part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” The house was empty at the time, as Congress was in recess and Omar’s presence was unclear.

Omar posted on X that the raid was “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponise federal law enforcement,” echoing her long‑standing criticism of President Trump’s immigration policies.

Trump instantly denied any role, calling the investigation “complete shams” and dismissing Omar as a “complainer” while demeaning her Somali heritage.

Democratic leaders – from Representative Jacky Rosen to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz – decried the operation as a “transparent attempt to interfere in elections,” pointing to the timing earlier than the November mid‑term vote.

The Justice Department’s policy generally limits enforcement actions that “raise the perception” of politicisation, making the raid’s timing especially striking. Reuters and Fox News have linked the probe to immigrant paperwork filed by Omar’s late father, though no evidence has been released.

Political analysts warn that the raid may set a precedent for using federal law‑enforcement tools against members of Congress ahead of highly contested elections.
