WILMINGTON, Del. (PulseWire) — William Stevenson, the 77-year-old man who was briefly married to former first lady Jill Biden, is currently in custody facing first-degree murder charges in the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, 64. The indictment was announced following a reported domestic dispute that resulted in police finding Linda unresponsive in their Wilmington home on December 28 of last year.
Stevenson was unable to post the half-a-million dollar bail and remains jailed as authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Linda's death. Details surrounding a motive have not been released by the police, and it is unclear if Stevenson has legal representation at this time.
Emergency services responded to the home just after 11 p.m. that night but were unable to revive Linda, leading to the ongoing investigation by the Delaware Department of Justice.
Formerly married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975, Stevenson gained renewed attention after his ex-wife's role as first lady to President Joe Biden. The president's spokesperson confirmed that Jill Biden would not be commenting on her ex-husband’s situation.
In addition to his tumultuous personal life, Stevenson was known in Delaware for founding the Stone Balloon, a notable music venue in Newark during the 1970s. In past interviews, he has openly criticized Jill Biden, describing their divorce as contentious.
Linda Stevenson was remembered in her obituary as a devoted family person, a mother and grandmother, and an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan, yet it notably did not mention her husband.
