Donald Trump has demanded an investigation into what he called a 'triple sabotage' during his visit to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.
In a post on social media, the US president referred to an escalator abruptly stopping as he and First Lady Melania Trump stepped on, a teleprompter malfunctioning during his speech, and an audio issue in the auditorium.
A UN official stated that the sound system was designed to allow attendees to hear translated speeches through earpieces. The UN also noted that a safety mechanism might have been triggered by Trump's videographer who was filming while moving backwards up the escalator.
Trump criticized the incidents on Truth Social, alleging that three separate issues constituted a 'REAL DISGRACE' at the UN and demanding an immediate probe from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
'This wasn't a coincidence, this was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed of themselves,' Trump commented.
He suggested that someone should be arrested for the escalator incident, referencing a report that stated UN workers joked about turning off the escalators. 'This was absolutely sabotage... All security tapes at the escalator should be saved, especially the emergency stop button. The Secret Service is involved,' he added.
Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the UN, supported Trump's call for an official inquiry, labeling the incidents as 'unacceptable.' He asserted that the United States would not tolerate threats to its security or dignity at international forums.
Following the escalator mishap, Trump faced more technical difficulties during his speech when the teleprompter reportedly malfunctioned, although it resumed functioning towards the end. 'I can only say that whoever's operating this teleprompter is in big trouble,' he remarked.
Furthermore, Trump noted audio issues, stating that 'the sound was completely off in the Auditorium' and that world leaders could not hear anything unless they used interpreters' earpieces. A UN official clarified that the sound system was intentionally designed for hearing translated speeches.
