In a significant development, Colombian authorities have arrested Élder José Arteaga Hernandez, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the assassination attempt on Miguel Uribe, a conservative senator and presidential hopeful. The shooting occurred during a campaign rally in Bogotá, where Uribe was shot in the head twice and remains in a critical condition. Artesaga, who has a substantial criminal record, allegedly influenced a 15-year-old to carry out the attack, leading to the teenager's arrest alongside four others.

Police chief Carlos Fernando Triana emphasized that Arteaga, known by the aliases Chipi and Costeño, was charged with "aggravated attempted homicide" and using minors in criminal activities. Authorities suspect that he played a pivotal role in coordinating the attack and supplying the gunman with a weapon. Following the incident on 7 June, the 15-year-old gunman attempted to flee but was apprehended and has pleaded not guilty.

Miguel Uribe, a prominent critic of President Gustavo Petro, declared his presidential candidacy for the 2026 elections last October. His political legacy traces back to a family involved in Colombia's Liberal Party; his mother was a journalist murdered by a drug cartel in 1991. The attempt on Uribe's life has sparked widespread outrage, with silent protests from thousands of Colombians demanding justice for the attacked senator.
