BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — At least 10 people were injured Thursday as two groups of people opened fire at each other inside the food court at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, police said. Some of those responsible fled the scene as a huge police response arrived. No one was immediately in custody. “To the thugs that did this, we’re going to catch you,” Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards said. Police Chief TJ Morse stated that the conflict arose from an argument inside the food court that escalated into shooting. He added, “Unfortunately there were some innocent people in the area who might have also caught some rounds.” Ten individuals were reported at local hospitals with various injuries, including at least two who required surgery. The police chief appealed for any video evidence from witnesses to aid in the investigation. He assured the community, “Right now there is no known threat to the public. Right here is the safest place in Baton Rouge.” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed awareness of the situation and cautioned the public to steer clear of the area. A WBRZ-TV employee shared her experience, stating she was taken to a safe holding area just as the police response intensified. The incident marks the second occurrence of gun violence in Louisiana this week; a tragic shooting in Shreveport claimed the lives of eight children earlier in the week.
