In brief
Haas F1 Team has restructured its operations, naming Laura Muller as the first female race engineer in Formula 1 alongside new roles for women in leadership positions, aiming for improved team performance this season.
---In a historic move, Haas F1 Team has announced the appointment of Laura Muller as the first female race engineer in Formula 1 history. The German engineer joins the team as part of a major restructure within the race operations team, set to improve its overall performance for the new season. Muller will be paired with Esteban Ocon, as the team aims to enhance its competitive edge. This restructure includes Carine Cridelich, another female recruit, taking over as head of strategy. Cridelich comes from Red Bull's Racing Bulls and will officially start her new role on March 1. The race engineer position is critical, directly influencing the driver’s experience on the track with commentary during broadcasts. Team principal Ayao Komatsu noted the organizational changes stemmed from a desire to enhance the efficiency of the race operations team, which he identified as a weak area last season. "I felt the trackside team was one of the weakest areas last year, and as the car became competitive, it exposed those weaknesses more starkly," Komatsu explained, expressing hopes for a turnaround given the team’s new budget, aligning with F1’s cap.Alongside Muller, the race engineer for Ocon’s teammate, rookie Oliver Bearman, will be Ronan O'Hare, who ascends from a performance engineer role within the team. The appointment of Francesco Nenci as chief race engineer from Audi’s Dakar Rally program, and Mark Lowe as sporting director, rounds out the significant appointments aimed at boosting the team’s performance capabilities.Muller’s historic role signifies a growing trend towards increased diversity within the F1 framework, as Komatsu stated that the best talent took precedence over factors such as gender. “It’s about how you fit into the team and maximize performance,” he remarked, highlighting the commitment to merit-based selection processes.Haas, known for its unique operational methods, has a strategic partnership with Ferrari, utilizing its design resources and parts, which emphasizes the need for effective execution in their race team given their relatively limited operational size. Komatsu, who took the helm before the 2024 season, aims to create a more competitive atmosphere within the team and is focused on achieving consistent results. “Haas has a unique situation with our headcount and infrastructure. I'm committed to pushing this team forward,” he concluded, as the team gears up for the new season ahead.
