Cornell Students Protest Hearing on Alleged Rape Case
On Monday, a crowd of Cornell University students gathered at the campus Student Assembly hall to voice anger and overall concern over a public hearing about a 2024 rape allegation involving a fraternity house.
Student Assembly chair and the complaint filed by a woman—referred to in court documents as Jane Doe—claim she was drugged and assaulted on campus. The university has denied any failure to punish those involved and has committed to an independent investigation of the case.
“We want real accountability and a safer campus for everyone,” said one student, a sophomore in biology, while thousands of other students chanted slogans demanding reforms.
Observers noted that the hearing was long‑awaited after the arrest of the fraternity’s alleged perpetrators. Students called for clearer policies on sexual and reproductive health and more robust reporting systems.
The BBC’s Nada Tawfik spoke to attendees on the scene, summarizing the mood and the community’s call for change.
