Patients and colleagues are remembering Dr. Cerina Fairfax as a devoted mother, a caring dentist, and the rock at the center of her family, after police reported that she was killed by her estranged husband, former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.

Authorities discovered both deceased in their home in Annandale, Virginia, early Thursday. Preliminary investigations suggest Justin Fairfax fatally shot Dr. Fairfax before taking his own life. The couple was in the midst of a divorce, and a judge had ordered Justin to leave the home by the end of the month.

Cerina Fairfax, 49, was the owner of a successful family dentistry practice in nearby Fairfax. A profile of her highlighted her love for reading, traveling, yoga, and spending time with her family and two Vizsla dogs.

Virginia Rep. Jennifer McClellan, who had personal ties through her husband’s political campaign, stated that Cerina's two teenage children were her greatest pride. Cerina Fairfax was a loving and dedicated mother, the cornerstone of her family, McClellan expressed.

Friend and patient Terron Sims II reflected on Cerina's quiet kindness, noting that her approach to dentistry stemmed from a place of love and compassion, describing it as a true service to others.

Recognized as the Outstanding Graduate of the Last Decade by the Virginia Commonwealth School of Dentistry, Dr. Fairfax’s impact on the dental community was profound. Interim Dean Dr. Jeffrey Johnson remarked on her dedication and commitment, emphasizing the void her passing leaves among her colleagues.

Ryan Dunn, CEO of the Virginia Dental Association, acknowledged her unwavering commitment to serving her community and reflected on her generous spirit that extended to charity work.

Justin and Cerina Fairfax met at Duke University, marrying in 2006. Justin's political career flourished until it was marred by allegations of sexual assault that surfaced prior to their marriage. He concluded his term as lieutenant governor in 2022, following an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.

Court documents revealed Cerina filed for separation nearly two years ago, but the couple continued to share their residence with their children, who were reportedly home during the tragic event. Tensions in the Fairfax household were well known, with a judge highlighting the heightened conflicts between the couple.
