The Thai capital of Bangkok has officially entered a state of disaster after days of heavy, almost continuous rainfall prompted the governor to declare a disaster‑affected zone.

About 300 millimetres (11.8 inches) of rain have rained on the city so far, and officials warn that further showers are likely in the coming days, Governor Chadchart Sittipunt told reporters.

Footage released in the same hour shows cars stranded in streets that have become fully submerged, with local police working to clear traffic and protect residents from rising waters.

Emergency services have set up evacuation centres in low‑lying districts and urged the public to avoid non‑essential travel, while utilities are battling widespread power outages.
