More than 50 coordinated arson attacks unfolded across Thailand’s southern provinces overnight, sparking a new wave of unrest and a temporary curfew.
The Thai military’s Internal Security Operations Command recorded the attacks occurring between 8:00 p.m. and midnight Saturday across Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani. Targets included a local government office, a convenience store and a stolen car, while several telecommunication towers were set ablaze.
Two people were injured – one by a bomb explosion in Muang district, Narathiwat – and the military warned residents to avoid suspicious objects.
Although no group has claimed responsibility, the attacks appear linked to the long‑running insurgency in the Muslim-majority southern provinces, led by the Barisan Revolusi Nasional. Since 2004, the conflict has claimed over 7,000 lives.
A temporary curfew was imposed in Narathiwat and lifted early Sunday. The Thai government is preparing a two‑day visit by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and cabinet members to Hat Yai next week, focusing on investment, flood protection and regional security.
