Australia outraged by Israel over aid worker death in Gaza

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has publicly decried an Israeli decision not to prosecute those responsible for the death of Zomi Frankcom, an aid worker with World Central Kitchen, who was killed in an IDF airstrike during April 2024.


Frankcom and six colleagues were hit by a strike the Israeli Army said stemmed from a failure in target identification and decision‑making. The Minister described the outcome as a “serious blow” on World Humanitarian Day.


“This falls far short of the accountability we expect,” Wong said, and announced she would call in the Israeli ambassador. She also ordered the Australian Ambassador to Israel to convey Australia’s stance directly to Israeli authorities and to outline next steps.


Australia stresses that it will continue to press Israel for justice for Frankcom and her fellow volunteers, calling the circumstances “especially insulting” given today’s global humanitarian observance.


The incident highlights ongoing tensions between NATO‑affiliated humanitarian groups and the Israel Defence Forces amid the Gaza conflict.
