In brief

The move aims to avert a ban on the popular video app, which has over 170 million users in the United States, as TikTok's ownership situation remains unresolved.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a second extension of 75 days for TikTok to comply with regulations requiring the app to secure a buyer for its U.S. operations or face a ban. In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his desire for the popular platform, which boasts more than 170 million users in the United States, to remain operational: "We do not want TikTok to 'go dark'." The platform is currently owned by Chinese company ByteDance. The initial deadline extension was granted in January, but that period is set to expire soon. ByteDance has confirmed ongoing discussions with the Trump administration but indicated that an official agreement remains elusive, citing unresolved key matters and required approvals under Chinese law.The push to sell TikTok stems from a bipartisan law passed by Congress, which asserts that ByteDance needs to divest its controlling stake or the app will be banned. Concerns about potential espionage and political manipulation by China have fueled the urgency. Despite a nearly finalized deal potentially falling through due to trade tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, negotiations continue. ByteDance has reportedly reached out to the White House to indicate that negotiations on tariffs are necessary for any deal to proceed.Several potential buyers have emerged, including Amazon, billionaire Frank McCourt, and tech firms like Microsoft and Blackstone, indicating strong interest in acquiring TikTok. Trump has revealed that his administration is engaging with multiple groups interested in the acquisition process, led by Vice-President JD Vance. The president has also floated a potential trade agreement where the sale of TikTok might be approved by China in exchange for tariff relief, emphasizing the economic leverage these tariffs provide in national security discussions. "We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China," Trump stated.
