In brief
On Wednesday evening, reports indicated that more than 22,000 users encountered issues with Facebook, while over 18,000 struggled with WhatsApp, as noted by Downdetector, an outage tracking site. Users from regions including the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and the US reported problems starting around 18:00 GMT.
Meta acknowledged the "technical issue" affecting its platforms and communicated their ongoing efforts to resolve it. Several users experienced difficulties such as non-functional apps and unrefreshable feeds. However, soon after, both WhatsApp and Instagram confirmed their services were restored. WhatsApp reassured users by stating, "We're back, happy chatting!" while Instagram echoed a similar sentiment, thanking users for their patience.Despite the turmoil, Meta's platforms, which boast over three billion monthly active users, are a significant part of the social media landscape. The last notable outage took place in 2021, lasting nearly six hours. As of now, Facebook has not provided specific details confirming the resolution of all issues, but users appear to be returning to normal activity.
