On April 8, a devastating incident struck the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, when its roof collapsed, claiming the lives of 235 individuals and injuring nearly 200 others. Those affected included victims from nine different countries and 130 children who tragically lost at least one parent. The fatalities, spanning ages 17 to 71, have left families shattered in the aftermath.

In the hours leading up to the collapse, Gregorio Adames, the club’s reservations manager, expressed growing concern about the deteriorating roof. He attempted to contact owner Antonio Espaillat, who was away at the time, while his sister Maribel Espaillat hesitated to cancel the show without his approval. The roof caved in just after midnight, during a scheduled event, despite clear signs of impending danger.

Now, both Antonio and Maribel Espaillat have been charged with involuntary homicide, facing potential jail time pending a bond hearing. Prosecutors are advocating for the maximum penalty, arguing that their negligence directly contributed to the demise of their patrons. As the investigation continues, the nightclub community and affected families seek answers and justice.
