Arlo Parks Embraces Dancefloor Freedom in New Album 'Ambiguous Desire'
A couple of years ago, Arlo Parks found herself in a nightclub, consoling a complete stranger. It was the summer in New York and everyone in the club was super-friendly, she recalls. She became drawn into a tale of love triangles and drama, working through heartbreak with fellow partygoers. This experience inspired her third album, Ambiguous Desire.
The album represents a vibrant exploration of party culture, marking a departure from the more introspective narratives of her Mercury Prize-winning debut, Collapsed In Sunbeams. Parks, who previously had limited nightlife experiences, decided to immerse herself in dance and freedom after her 2023 Soft Machine tour, declaring, I wanted to take time to pause and live my life. That shift is reflected in her new work, filled with themes of yearning and romantic uncertainty but framed by a newfound freedom to dance away her cares.
Continuing her evolution, Parks draws from experiences in nightclubs, highlighting how each moment, whether joyful or painful, coexists under strobe lights. The captivating track 'Heaven' transports listeners to a Los Angeles gig, while 'Get Go' channels the thrill of dancing with strangers in London.
Ambiguous Desire showcases a fresh sound enriched by glitchy beats and pulsating rhythms, yet retains the emotional authenticity that has endeared her to fans. Parks describes her artistry as a collage, weaving various genres into relatable narratives. Songs like 'Beams' reflect the emotional turmoil of relationships, showcasing her lyrical depth amidst rhythmic structures.
The album marks a significant statement in Parks's career, blending her introspective roots with a lively exploration of communal experiences. Embracing her growth, Parks hopes to create timeless music that resonates, saying, I want something that lasts. As she reclaims her life and sound, Arlo Parks stands poised to further impact the music landscape.
