On Friday morning, around 8:30 AM local time, jail officials discovered the missing inmates during a routine headcount. The jailbreak occurred around midnight, and Sheriff Susan Hutson stated, “There’s no way for anyone to get out of this facility without help.” Security footage revealed that the inmates had forcefully removed their cell door and subsequently dismantled a toilet, breaching a wall to escape.

One escapee, identified as Kendall Myles, was apprehended in the French Quarter after attempting to flee foot and hiding beneath a car. The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office initially reported that eleven inmates had escaped, later amending the number to ten. Authorities released the names and images of the other escapees, who are considered armed and dangerous.

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick labeled the prison break as an "urgent and serious situation," urging residents to report any suspicious activity. The escapees are likely no longer dressed in prison uniforms, leading to fears that individuals who aided them might face charges. The FBI and US Marshals have been enlisted in the ongoing search, which centers around a facility located just a few miles from the bustling French Quarter.
