Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following up on a domestic-related investigation, authorities have said.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris stated that the gunman was fatally shot by the police.
The incident took place just after 14:00 local time (18:00 GMT). Images from the scene showed a police officer being airlifted in a medical helicopter.
The shooting resulted in a nearby school district in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, a small town of approximately 2,500 residents, briefly sheltering in place. The district later confirmed that the school was not affected.
Officials assured the public that there was no active threat following the shooting.
The incident unfolded in a rural area of York County in North Codorus Township, roughly 100 miles (160 km) west of Philadelphia.
Authorities have remained tight-lipped about specific details surrounding the incident as the investigation continues, stated Commissioner Paris.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro arrived in the area on Wednesday afternoon to meet with the families of the slain officers, offering his condolences. We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country, Shapiro expressed, stating that the violence is unacceptable and urging society to do better.
In honor of the fallen officers, Shapiro ordered all state flags to be lowered to half-mast at public buildings and grounds throughout Pennsylvania.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that agents are providing assistance to local and state responders. Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community, he stated.
